New viewing platform on Sassafras Mountain!

The old overlook on Sassafras Mountain
The new Sassafras Mountain Overlook

          OK!!!   I'll tell you right up front that I don't like this new viewing platform!

          It is not pleasing to the eye! Ugly!! When I got out of my car my first thought was this looks like it was made out of old railroad ties cut down to the size of regular lumber. Creosote soaked lumber used for a viewing platform? Of course I am wrong, it is painted black and does not fit in with the beauty of Sassafras Mountain. Why not stain it a pretty oak finish so it is more appealing to the eye? Let's have the natural wood finish blend in with the surrounding trees and fallen leaves, might be hard to do seems how they cut trees down! I understand these were Graduate students who designed and built this overlook, come on people - it is a rectangle, where is your creativity? Give it some angles and a half circle at the end. The viewing platform does not have the WOW! factor. Give it the WOW! factor to go along with the overwhelming view I see when I stand on this viewing platform! What's up with the sky blue rails? do they really add to the experience? No I didn't feel like I was standing out in space, there is a big rock sticking out directly under the front of the platform. Maybe you could have extended it out another ten feet!

End of platform, don't look down.
          OK!  I'm done expressing my opinion, it is scary to think that the state  is going to build a four story tower on top of this, the highest mountain in SC. How is that going to look and is it needed? Will it blend in with the beauty of this mountain range or will it be one big eyesore for all to see? Only time will tell.

          I'll keep hiking the Foothills Trail and loving these Upstate Mountains and I'll keeping wondering why nature and the natural way of things can't just be left alone. Myself, and I'm sure several other hikers were looking at the view off of Sassafras Mountain long before the first viewing platform was built, we just made our way to the edge and the view was there!

Round Mountain - Foothills Trail

Southern Appalachian Mountains
          Solo hiking in the fall!  Driving up Hwy. 130 from SC into NC just as you cross the state line there is a parking area to your right, the Foothills Trail crosses the road at this point and you can go left to Oconee State Park or right to Table Rock State Park. Left will take you up Round Mountain and right will take you down to the Whitewater River. I'm feeling the need for a mountain top experience! Put my hiking boots on and snug them up comfortable, have a fleece and hat in my day pack, water and snacks, the basic survival  gear, and my trekking poles.

Trail head
          The weather is about as good as it gets as you can see  in the Trail head picture. I hiked this section many years ago and remember it being very steep and full of downed trees. We will see what the trail has to offer us today.  Amazing! a very pleasant, easy, relaxing, enjoyable hike! No downed trees to crawl under or climb over, no tree limbs reaching out to grab your day pack or to poke your eye out. The trail was back and forth with nice gentle switch backs and views of the mountains and Lake Jocassee, I could see the water in the Bad Creek Project. A simple wind would blow from time to time and refresh my creaky joints and tottering body. A few benches were built along side the trail and I availed myself of one and sat and rested and ate a bar of granola and drank some water from my faithful Nalgene bottle. My real self revealed himself as I thought of how good God has been to me and my family. I sat and revealed in the beauty of the mountains and the lake exposed before me, the only natural thing for me to do was to stand and sing "How Great Thou Art"

                        O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
                     Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made,
                      I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
                      Thy power through the universe displayed,

                     When through the woods and forest glades I wander
                      And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
                      When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
                       And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze;

                      And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
                      Sent Him to die,  I scarce take it in;
                       That on the cross my burden gladly bearing,
                       He bled and died to take away my sin;

                       When Christ shall come with-shout of acclamation
                        And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
                        Then I shall bow in humble adoration
                        And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

                         Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
                          How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
                          Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
                          How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

Lake Jocassee
          You can see the breeze ripples on the water and the blue haze shrouding the mountain range. Awesome! God created for us - A beautiful earth!       When I finished singing, I heard no applause or laughter, no one said,"Praise God" or "Are you all right?" so I reckon no one was around to hear me. In a few minutes the birds and squirrels started moving around and the universe began to relax and the earth slowly turned on her axises. I continued hiking up the mountain and turned right on the spur trail headed to and ending at NC Hwy 281. Go a little ways on this trail and turn left off this trail and it will take you to the top of Round Mountain. The spur trail has water! Good to know on top of a mountain.

          I try to always return home so I headed  back down the trail and it was as nice hiking down the trail as it was hiking up. The car was waiting where I had told her to stay, I removed my hiking shoes and put on my crocs, got in the car and drove home.

Hunting Island State Park

          Thanksgiving weekend was spent here at this Park and a good time was had by all.

          Whoa! What a weekend!

          Beautiful! Awesome! and Cool!

          Prodigious! Phenomenal! Sensational! Spectacular! Bewitching!

          Four opening lines. I have decided to use the fourth line and write this blog based on the adjectives I have found which will best describe the camping weekend spent by my wife and I. We were joined by my niece, her husband, and three children for our seventh annual Thanksgiving camping weekend. All things must come to an end and next years trip may not happen, we will see!

          The SC State Parks website describes Hunting Island as, "Five miles of pristine SC beaches, thousands of acres of marsh and maritime forest, a salt water lagoon and ocean inlet are all part of the parks natural allure." I say that is prodigious!

Gracie on the beach.
          The first morning at camp Gracie and I got up before the sunrise and walked the beach so I could get some sunrise pictures. We walked a couple of miles and took several nice pictures, no one else was on the beach just us two. Our walk took us past another group of campsites that are located just behind the sand dunes, with easy access to the beach. The second morning we walked again, but it was a little later and the sun had already risen, we also walked the other direction away from the campground and meant a few more more people enjoying the early morning beach. A lady rode pass us  and then turned around and rode up to me and stopped. Gracie and I stopped and we all smiled and said "Hi." She said,"I took a picture of you yesterday. You were walking on the beach before sunrise, weren't you?" I said,"Yes." She went on to tell how she was sitting on the dunes with her camera to get pictures of the sun coming up. When Gracie and I walked by she took our silhouette against the brightening sky. I said,"That's cool!" and then she said,"I asked my friend beside me, How long do you think they have been walking together? She said, your dog watches you when you walk, she is always looking to see were you are and she moves with you, she never is very far away." I know that I am way too emotionally attached to my Gracie girl, but her story was very sweet and she'll never know how much it means to me. Gracie is thirteen and laying right here under my desk by my feet. We became us when she was eight weeks old.
